What is an abortion?
According to the British National Health Service "Abortion is when a pregnancy is ended so that it does not result in the birth of a child. Sometimes it is called 'termination of pregnancy'". Terminations are performed medically or surgically. Abortion laws vary from country to country, with most allowing termination of pregnancy within the first weeks, or for specific reasons. Malta is the only country within the EU that bans abortion on all occasions. There are no exceptions in the law to allow an abortion when the woman's health is at risk, in cases of severe fetal malformation, or in cases of rape or incest. Treatment for an ectopic pregnancy by indirect abortion is allowed with a case-by-case decision.
In Malta there is currently a bill being discussed that would decriminalize abortion.
With such a complex topic that are those with different opinions, normally referred to as pro-life (who are anti-abortion) and pro-choice (who are in favour of abortion).
