What are the risk factors for miscarriage?
Unfortunately, there are multiple risk factors for miscarriage. The women's age is considered a risk factor, as women older than 35 have a higher chance of experiencing a miscarriage. The risk of miscarriage at 35 years of age is that of 20%, at 40 years of age, it increases to 40%, while at 45 years of age it goes up to 80%. Previous miscarriages experienced is also a risk factor. There is a very high risk for experiencing another miscarriage if you have already experienced two miscarriages after each other. Certain chronic conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes impose a higher risk of miscarriage. Other risk factors include uterine or cervical problems, smoking, alcohol consumption and drugs, being underweight or overweight, and certain highly invasive prenatal genetic tests such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis.
