Menstruation
Is it normal that I use the toilet more than usual during my period?
Yes, this is normal. Your bowels are affected by the changes in hormone levels caused by periods. Some of these hormones, called prostaglandins, cause your uterus to contract to stimulate the shedding of the uterine lining - they can also cause the intestines to contract, leading to increased frequency in needing to go to the bathroom. Progesterone, another hormone produced during periods, can sometimes cause either constipation or diarrhea, and if you have a condition related to your bowel, such as IBD, then being on your period can make those symptoms worse. You may also notice that during your period you crave different foods that are higher in fat, which can cause changes in your bowel movements. Having your period can also be quite stressful, which is also known to change your bowel movements. Some ways to help control this include eating a diet high in fibre, exercising, or taking ibuprofen, which, besides easing discomfort caused by cramping, can also inhibit the release of prostaglandins. If it disrupts your daily life significantly, then consult with your doctor about possible treatment options.
