Menstruation
I have irregular periods - what should I do?
Irregular periods can be caused by any number of things. Most menstrual cycles last about 28 days, but they can be as short as 21 days or as long as 35 days. It can be due to either puberty or menopause, or because of pregnancy. Hormonal contraceptives can also cause irregular periods for some time. Extreme weight change or overexercising can also cause irregular periods. It can also be due to an underlying condition, such as PCOS or an issue with your thyroid. Consulting your doctor is recommended if your periods suddenly start becoming irregular before the age of 45 or if they occur more often than every 21 days or less often than every 35 days. If your periods last longer than 7 days then you should also consult with your doctor or gynae. If you have irregular periods and you are trying to get pregnant then consulting with your doctor about the best methods would also be helpful.
